A History of Heights
Now, here’s something you may or may not know about us cats: we come from a long line of tree-climbing felines! My wild ancestors used tall trees and rocky ledges to escape danger, survey surroundings, and even hunt our dinner.
Height equals safety and control, and that same instinct is hardwired into me today. When you find me on top of your wardrobe or balancing on the curtain rail, I’m not up to no good (mostly) – I’m simply embracing my inner wildcat.
Surveying My Territory
Why do cats like being high up? Easy. From up here, I can see everything.
From the top of a shelf or a high perch, I have full view over my territory. It makes me feel safe and totally in control. In fact, these elevated spots help me feel emotionally secure. So, if I’m feeling unsure – like when guests visit or there have been changes around the home – a high point gives me the perfect retreat, helping me to cope with stress and boosting my confidence.
Naturally Curious, Naturally Playful
We cats are very inquisitive creatures, and being high up lets me keep an eye on the world without being disturbed. It’s the perfect balance between being engaged and out of your direct attention.
Plus, climbing, jumping, and leaping are excellent ways to keep my body and mind active. Plotting my route is part of the fun, like solving a puzzle where the reward is simply getting to the top!
And one last thing – warmth! High places, especially near ceilings or radiators, are often warmer. And as you know, we cats do love a toasty nap.
How to Stop Cats Climbing the Curtains?
But what if I’m causing chaos? Sometimes my love for heights might make life a little tricky for you humans. Create Window Perches
I love watching the world go by, and a secure window perch or hammock is ideal enrichment. Just be mindful – some of us get frustrated if we spot birds or rival cats we can’t interact with. A peaceful view is key.
Make My Space Feel Safe
