Why Do Cats Like High Places? A Kitty’s Point of View!

Who’s that I can spy below me? Ah, my favorite human!

What am I doing all the way up here on this shelf, I hear you ask? Well, it is my favorite spot to sit, snooze, and observe the world!

You’ve still got questions? Come on then, settle in and allow me to explain why cats love high places.

A History of Heights

Now, here’s something you may or may not know about us cats: we come from a long line of tree-climbing felines! My wild ancestors used tall trees and rocky ledges to escape danger, survey surroundings, and even hunt our dinner.

Height equals safety and control, and that same instinct is hardwired into me today. When you find me on top of your wardrobe or balancing on the curtain rail, I’m not up to no good (mostly) – I’m simply embracing my inner wildcat.

Surveying My Territory

Why do cats like being high up? Easy. From up here, I can see everything.

From the top of a shelf or a high perch, I have full view over my territory. It makes me feel safe and totally in control. In fact, these elevated spots help me feel emotionally secure. So, if I’m feeling unsure – like when guests visit or there have been changes around the home – a high point gives me the perfect retreat, helping me to cope with stress and boosting my confidence.

Naturally Curious, Naturally Playful

We cats are very inquisitive creatures, and being high up lets me keep an eye on the world without being disturbed. It’s the perfect balance between being engaged and out of your direct attention.

Plus, climbing, jumping, and leaping are excellent ways to keep my body and mind active. Plotting my route is part of the fun, like solving a puzzle where the reward is simply getting to the top!

And one last thing – warmth! High places, especially near ceilings or radiators, are often warmer. And as you know, we cats do love a toasty nap.

How to Stop Cats Climbing the Curtains?

But what if I’m causing chaos? Sometimes my love for heights might make life a little tricky for you humans. Maybe you’re wondering how to stop us cats climbing curtains, how to stop cats climbing trees, or even just how to stop cats climbing altogether. Well, don’t worry – I’m not doing it to be naughty!

Here’s how you can help me satisfy my instincts without sacrificing your curtains:

Provide Vertical Space

Cat trees, towers, and wall-mounted shelves are all brilliant alternatives to curtains. Add some non-slip mats or soft blankets to make these spots more inviting. And if I’m a bit older, consider placing furniture to create lower step-ups so I can still reach my favorite places with ease.

Create Window Perches

I love watching the world go by, and a secure window perch or hammock is ideal enrichment. Just be mindful – some of us get frustrated if we spot birds or rival cats we can’t interact with. A peaceful view is key.

Make My Space Feel Safe

My top tip? Make sure to plug in FELIWAY® Optimum near my favorite high-up hangouts! This pheromone diffuser releases calming messages that help me feel even more secure.

Whatever you do though, don’t force me down from my high spot unless it’s really necessary. These perches are my sanctuary, and there’s nothing more unsettling than being forced away from your safe space.

And if I live with other feline companions, make sure we each have our own high-up hideouts with safe access routes, so no one feels trapped or challenged.

Safety First

Lastly, check that all elevated areas are safe and stable. Remove any nearby breakables, and keep high windows closed or secure. A little precaution goes a long way in keeping me out of trouble!

The View from the Top

So, back to the main question: why do cats like being high up? Simply put, it keeps us healthy and feeling secure! Whether we’re watching the world go by, escaping a noisy moment, or enjoying a sunny nap, height provides comfort whenever we need it most.
